Stay in a Fully Modernized Historic Farmhouse
This historic 1910 farmhouse has been given a thoroughly modern update that embraces its history as a cozy family dwelling. Adjacent to the former site of the Critzer family’s 19th-century Barrel Stave Factory, the Farmhouse is a throwback to a simpler time. Formerly heated by a wood stove only, it is easy to imagine the pace of rural life a century ago while staying at this beautifully intact country estate. The original barn still stands on the property at the end of a large lawn.
A clean sweep of renovation in 2022 turned this rural homestead into a modern retreat. The main floor has been completely redesigned for optimal flow. A plush living room space opens from the entrance door to a gourmet kitchen and open dining area. Laundry is conveniently located in a separate room off the side. Outfitted with high-speed internet and state-of-the-art climate control, brand-new streamlined kitchen appliances, laundry, and two lounging areas with TVs, you can sink into the rustic setting with all of modern life at your fingertips.
Accommodations
The Farmhouse sleeps up to fourteen guests in its four bedrooms. On the ground level, there is a queen bedroom with a private full bathroom. An additional half bath is off of the main level dwelling space. Upstairs, three bedrooms share another full bathroom with an enclosed shower. There are two amply sized king bedrooms and an additional room with two sets of twin bunks.
In the upstairs landing, a small lounge with a sleeper sofa and TV provides extra space for guests to sleep or use as a kids’ zone.
The Great Outdoors
A corner wall of windows facing the stunning Blue Ridge allows natural light to stream directly into the main space. Descend into a yard big enough for family sports games from the back deck. Grill out or luxuriate in the pea gravel patio around a stocked firepit or on the front porch. Whether you’re assembling for a family get-together or gathering a crew of buddies for a winery weekend, the Farmhouse is an ideal setting.

Just 25 miles from Charlottesville, this property sits in the middle of Virginia’s Route 151 Winery and Brewery Trail. Within ten minutes from the Farmhouse, there are numerous spots to eat or sample gorgeous Cabernet Francs and American Pale Ales.
Here are a few of our favorite nearby attractions:
Wild Man Dan Brewery (0.1 mi)- Just two minutes walking distance from the Farmhouse sits a hidden gem of a local brewery. Wild Man Dan’s is a microbrewery run by spirited couple Dan and Terri. They serve up handcrafted brews from very small batches (think 10 gallons at a time) in a casual setting that will keep you returning during your stay.
Blue Mountain Brewery (2.8 mi) - Family-friendly pub fare with an emphasis on pizza. Seasonal music offerings on an outdoor stage make this a local attraction. Rotating beer menus as well as a standard core offering. Ideal for larger parties and families.
Afton Mountain Vineyards (3.8 mi) - Arguably the best wine in Central Virginia, this vineyard has been operational since the dawn of Virginia’s wine scene in the 1970s. Situated in a private valley, their sophisticated Cab Franc will blow you away. Light snacks are available. Indoor and outdoor seating throughout the year. Best for parties of 6 or fewer. Kids and leashed pets are welcome.
Cardinal Point Winery (1.5 miles) hosts music and annual events like an Oyster Festival and Wine Lover’s 5K. Owner and winemaker Time Gorman offers an impressive array of wines, from the standard Virginia staples to inventive Chardonnays and unusual Viognier blends.
Paulie’s Pig Out (3.1 mi) - For a truly Southern gastronomic experience, head south on 151 to this hole-in-the-wall barbecue spot. There is no web page, so you must go old school for this jaunt! Exceptional classic soul food and sumptuously sauced pork await.
Dickie Brothers Orchard (2.4 mi) - Historically local family has been farming here since 1752. hosts seasonal pick-your-own apple sessions and seasonal offerings of pumpkins, plums, berries, and other delectables. Check their calendar to see what’s fresh!
