A Bavarian-Inspired Legacy. Enjoy Fresh Taps, Wood-Fired Cuisine, and Stunning Views.

Inspired by craft brewpubs found in the Bavarian Alps, Devil’s Backbone Brewing Company strives to share creative and originally brewed favorites from the heart of Central Virginia’s stunning overlooks. The titular mountain range from which the brewery operates was dubbed “the Devil’s Backbone” by early explorers for its perilous peaks and winding vistas. A visit to Nelson County’s Basecamp & Meadows location offers beautiful scenic drinking and dining with indoor and outdoor seating and bars. In addition, the Basecamp is equipped with a cigar bar and lounge, its own ABC store, and even an array of rentable campsites to fully immerse yourself in the Blue Ridge Mountains with a beverage in hand. The venue hosts regularly scheduled events, including live music from regional favorite bands and privately rented conferences and gatherings. A trip through Central Virginia’s mountains is never complete without a stop by Devil’s Backbone… “where the beer flows like beer!”

Drinks

Though the Basecamp & Meadows venue offers its share of attractions and fun, the main draw is the variety of uniquely flavored original craft brews. The brewery’s Light Lager is an appealing albeit safe place to start. However, what fun is a brewery trip if not to try something you can’t get anywhere else? For those who prefer darker drinks, the Black Rock Nitro Milk Stout is sure to please. The Zurich Reserve is a German-inspired bock that also packs a punch. Lighter and fruitier alternatives include Captain Chimpy’s Grapefruit Goggles and the Blackberry Apricot Sour. A handful of original and imported IPAs fill out a beer list with something for everyone to love. Bar locations are found indoors and outdoors for anyone craving a local cider, wine, spirit, or house cocktail.

Menu

Devil’s Backbone’s brewpub uniquely blends local ingredients and German-inspired pub fare. The Crispy Smoked Brat Bites ($12) is a perfect complimentary starter to pair with your drink, coming with beer mustard and sauerkraut. The sandwich options are highlighted by the Bone Dipper ($17) featuring smoked sliced beef top round and the vegetarian-friendly Grilled Beyond Burger ($14). The most decadent menu option comes off the Brewpub specialty list— the traditionally prepared Elk Jägerschnitzel ($24) topped with a delectable brown mushroom sauce. The Baby Kale and Broccoli Salad Bowl ($14) is a healthy alternative. At the same time, the München on Pumpkin Créme Brûlée ($9) is the perfect dessert for those with a sweet tooth.

Pros

The primary strength of Devil’s Backbone’s Basecamp location is its versatility. No matter how you want to sip, there is a welcoming space to do so. The site emphasizes the beautiful mountain setting in which its beverages are crafted, with spectacular views and several outdoor accommodations. From campsites to outdoor decks to fire pits, the Blue Ridge mountains are the perfect setting to gather with friends or family and have a tasting. The unique German lodge-inspired interior is another draw, feeling especially warm and inviting in the winter months. Cigar bars, liquor stores, and live performances are enjoyable in their own right as well. To rent a space at the Basecamp for your private event, visit this link. In addition, while its beverages are for adults only, the venue welcomes visitors of all ages. Feel free to bring the kids and enjoy the mountain air as a family.

Cons

Though the venue offers exquisite views and natural beauty, these come at the cost of an isolated location. Before planning your visit, ensure you are ready for the drive and remoteness associated with a mountain brewery. If you are willing to make the trek, we recommend making reservations during exceptionally high-volume visiting hours. These include (but are not limited to) holiday seasons, scheduled live events, and weekends. Without a reservation, wait times can become a bit long due to Devil’s Backbone’s heightened popularity following its acquisition by Anheuser Busch, which saw its distribution increase. Without easily accessible or nearby alternatives, securing a table at your desired time is highly recommended.
