Authentic Virginia Barbecue with a Side of Country Charm
Country charm abounds in this cozy BBQ shack in Nelson. You won’t miss the giant pig floating atop a sign linked to an old red-painted brick building as you drive south on 151. In addition to ribs, pulled pork and chicken, and the traditional accompaniments, there are also turkey croissants and country ham. There is indoor and outdoor seating, and you can make yourself at home amongst the pig-themed country decor. The staff is friendly, and the environment is fully relaxed rural hospitality - kid-friendly and affordable!
Drinks
Sweet tea, lemonade, and Coke-a-Cola products
Menu
If there is such a thing as Virginia barbecue, it comes drenched in sauce and made with love from the kitschy counter of Blue Ridge Pig. (You can order sauce on the side if you like a more North Carolina-style treatment; don’t worry.) Order in bulk ($15/lb) or as a sandwich. The smoked turkey croissant is piled high with meat and veggies - a true standout, even at a BBQ joint! ($10). Complement your meal with traditional side dishes like dilled potato salad, baked beans, mac and cheese, and cole slaw.
Pros
Local business, fun decor
Cons
Small menu, no special dietary considerations
Alternatives
Paulie’s Pig Out, Basic Necessities (for vegetarian options)
FAQ
Can I order ahead?
You can call in an order for pick-up. Blue Ridge Pig also takes bulk catering orders.
Is there a gluten-free option?
If you eat only meat and potato salad, you’ll be mostly in the clear. However, this is not recommended for anyone with a severe gluten allergy.
Where is the best place to stay near Blue Ridge Pig?
Afton Mountain Inn, a beautiful countryside specialty hotel, is ideal for a romantic getaway. For larger parties or a girls’ weekend away, peek at Afton Clubhouse (3-bedroom house) or Afton Farmhouse (4-bedroom house). Both properties are about 10 minutes north of Blue Ridge Pig and dozens of other wineries, breweries, and other attractions along Route 151.
