An Epicurean Cafe Serving Wine, Cheese, and Chocolate in Nellysford, VA

What happens when an American-turned-Parisian returns to the States for some rural replenishing? She needs a reliable source of wine, cheese, and chocolate and a cafe where she can hold court. This is precisely what drove Basic Necessities founder Kay Pfaltz to establish this epicurean cafe and gift shop at the foot of Wintergreen.

French country meets shabby chic inside this tiny mountainside cafe. Chairs are mismatched, and string lights wind their way around art, vintage silverware, and intimate tables. Weekend dinners, Sunday brunch, and weekday lunches are healthy and light. You can also grab supplies for your winery visits, such as imported cheeses and bread from Albemarle Baking Company and many other local specialties.

Drinks

The owner takes pride in selecting beautiful, mostly imported wines. This is your chance to put your wine-drinking in the very capable hands of someone trained in wine and whose business revolves around creating pleasurable pairings. Beer drinkers will need to adjust their barometers for this particular venue.

Call ahead to reserve a spot for Kay’s Wednesday evening wine tastings.

Menu

Tuck into this shop for lunch with your bestie. You’ll find well-made salads with smoked salmon ($13) and a delightfully European charcuterie called the Piggeries Platter ($15). Brunches include fresh eggs from local farms, while dinners can include anything from scallops to spring curry. The menu changes week to week, depending on what’s in season. The owners offer suggested wine pairings with each entree. If you’re inclined to stop in for the “necessities,” a curated selection of gourmet cheese and bread is consistently on hand.

Pros

Local business, high-quality ingredients, vegan offerings

Cons

Too small for kids or larger parties, small selections

Alternatives

Greenwood Grocery & Gourmet
