Visiting
While typically not crowded, visitors should know that visiting Sugar Hollow in the morning and/or on weekdays will give them the best chance to enjoy the preserve with minimal commotion.
Visitors should know that Sugar Hollow is a large reservoir, meaning different rules and activities apply in different preserve areas. Demonstrate caution, especially when fishing, as guidelines are in place to keep the site both enjoyable to visitors and friendly to the ecosystem. This site offers information on trout fishing in Virginia and should be consulted, especially by newcomers. While mostly trout, anglers can additionally find bass and panfish in the waters. The Dam and reservoir are not for swimming or boating, making it a bank fishing location. With proper licensing, fishing is permitted seasonally from sunrise to sunset.
For hikers, consult the trail guide in the initial parking lot to determine your preferred route. Our top recommendations are the out and back, unmarked-Blue Hole trail that deposits you at a large swimming hole and the Big Branch Falls trail. The Blue Hole trail is a mostly shaded, ~3-mile trail that leads you along and across the river, passing by smaller swimming areas and waterfalls. To begin, head to the silver gate near the entrance of the parking lot. Head to the red gate on the other end of the lot for the Big Branch Falls trail. This hike is 4.6 miles out and back, with a few more river crossings. You will reach the edges of Shenandoah National Park and find waterfalls with the opportunity to relax upon rocky outcrops or swim beneath them. This site has more thorough directions for both trails.
FAQ
How do I get to Sugar Hollow Dam and Reservoir?
The Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources recommends taking Route 614 west of Whitehall to reach the lake. Mapping to Sugar Hollow can be difficult. Parking is available at 6796 Sugar Hollow Road, which marks the “end” of the road, but mapping Stinson Vineyards (4744 Sugar Hollow Road) and continuing for about five miles is another way to arrive at the initial parking for the Dam. What should I bring?
For those looking to fish, a fishing license is required by the Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources. Instructions, qualifications, and exceptions for licensure can be found on this site. Fishers should also bring appropriate rods, bait, hooks, and more to ensure the best experience. For hikers, we suggest seasonally appropriate outerwear and a backpack containing hiking essentials such as sunscreen, first aid materials, a portable charger, snacks, and hydration. Hikers should consider that some trails require river crossing, so bring appropriate footwear, as your feet might get wet. If you plan to swim, a towel and swimwear are also recommended.
