Fine Wines and Blue Ridge Splendor
Located on the historic Seven Oaks Farm, Septenary Winery is a small winery that will delight small parties looking for a relaxed pace and romantic setting. The manor house was built in 1840, while the adjacent Black’s Tavern had been in place since the 1700s and hosted, among others, the explorers Lewis and Clark. Of the seven great white oaks for which the farm is named, one still stands. The vineyards here have only seven acres of vines but are supported by a second set of vines in Goochland. The differing terroirs allow for slight, specialized crus. With unobtrusive signage and an air of distinguished grace, this is not the venue for your most boisterous crowd. Plan your visit on a less busy day, when the knowledgeable staff will indulge you with details of each wine during a tasting. Note: This is a 21 and over venue.
Drinks
Septenary’s 2021 Viognier ($34) is light and crisp, with floral overtones. Another light option for the taste buds is the 2021 Summer Kitchen Rosé ($30). The 2016 Coleman Blend ($49) stands up to other local wines with depth and lovely fruit. Try this bottle as a treat for the red wine lover or as a gift for the collector. If visiting in the winter, try the port-style 2017 Tavern ($36), made entirely with Donrfelder grapes.
Menu
Picnic packs of snack food are available.
Pros
Historic and romantic, leashed dogs are allowed outdoors.
Cons
All guests must be 21+. There is limited seating and no shade in the outdoor seating area, and service can be slow and a bit pricy for the area.

Does Septenary Winery host events?
No, but they do host other events of 50 guests or fewer.
Is it worth the drive?
It depends. Are you on a date, winding through Skyline Drive, delighting in the dappled sunlight? Then, yes! On the other hand, if your college friends are demanding “more rosé now!” from the back of the wine tour van, you’ll want to go elsewhere.
Are children allowed?
Unlike other vineyards, this is for guests 21 and up only.
Do they do tastings?
If you can score an indoor table, Septenary does seated, attended tastings.
Is it true that Septenary is connected to Dave Matthews Band?
Yes, the former owner of Septenary was DMB’s long-time manager. It was sold to the current owners in 2015.
