A Hip Pizzeria Serving Handcrafted, Gourmet Pies with Local Ingredients.
Dr. Ho’s labels itself “The Alternative Pizza” in reference to its decidedly hippie, homey charm. Over the years, Dr. Ho’s has hosted innumerable local musicians to play unplugged amongst the packed tables of happily pizza-stuffed locals. Paper plates decorated by children sometimes adorn the walls, and the vibe is decidedly “Don’t worry, be groovy”. The service is consistently friendly and warm, no matter how busy they get. Located in North Garden at the crossroads of Plank Rd and 29 South, this is an excellent stop on your way to Pippin Hill Vineyard or Loving Cup Winery.
Ok, but how’s the pizza? Over-the-top delicious! Known for its heavy-handed approach to toppings, Dr. Ho’s caters to the pizza maximalists of the world. Delight in the spirit of generosity as you dine at this country gem of a pizzeria!
Drinks
Fountain drinks and bottled juices are available. As for alcoholic beverages, you can take your pick from a wide variety of local (and sometimes hard to find!) beers and ciders. The wine list includes several choices of local picks (White Hall and King Family, among them) as well as affordable imported bottles.
Menu
From pizza, nachos, and sandwiches to salads and house-churned ice cream treats, this menu has something to delight every (hungry) member of the party. Start with the loaded Dr. Ho’s Nachos ($15) or the Fat & Sassy Garlic Bread ($10) before diving into some of the most decorated pies you’ve ever seen.
Our favorite pie is an unusual one. The Ragin’ Cajun ($21/24) is essentially jambalaya on a crust: spicy Andouille sausage, peppers, Creole-spiked shrimp, and cheese make this an unforgettable meal.
For the vegetarians, try a spinach-based Popeye or the Champignon, a mushroom medley.
If you didn’t bring your eat-the-house-down appetite, try one of the specialty salads. Flank Steak Salad ($15) is available from time to time as a special. The Asparagus and Arugula salad ($14) tossed in a truffle oil vinaigrette with local goat cheese, almonds, and charred red onion is a hands-down winner.
Pros
Family-friendly, large portions, locally sourced ingredients
Cons
Very rich food, a bit heavy on the oil.
Alternatives
The Batesville Market, Krispy Krunchy Chicken (next door in the gas station market)
