Delfosse Crafts a Diverse Range of Exceptional Varietal Wines.
This gem of a winery is tucked away from the hubbub of 151, but it’s well worth the scenic drive. In operation since 2000, Delfosse is one of the founding members of the Monticello AVA (American Viticultural Area). Under new ownership from the original founders and winemakers, they swept the 2023 Governer’s Cup and have kept small business practices like guided tastings and tasteful expansion of offerings without brazen overtures to wine bus tours and the like. Note the terraced vines, which are some of the only examples of this style in Virginia. You’ll enjoy personable pourings from friendly staff or perhaps the owners themselves. Bring the family and dogs out for a picnic by the lake.
Drinks
Reasonably priced wine flights ($12 for four generous pours). If you opt for a bottle, go for the 2020 Petit Verdot reserve ($42) or the 2017 Screaming Hawk Meritage, both of which are gold medal winners. For a winter warmer, go for their 2016 Meditation ($34), a luscious barrel-aged port.
Menu
Charcuterie items are available for purchase, but outdoor picnics are welcome.
Pros
Dog-friendly, child-friendly, relaxed environment, excellent customer service
Cons
A bit off the beaten path, not for large groups
Alternatives
Cardinal Point, Afton Mountain Winery, Pippin Hill Vineyards
